CRAIGSVILLE, VA — Augusta Correctional Center is under lockdown, and the Virginia Department of Corrections Gang Unit is interviewing inmates involved in a fight last week that resulted in the more stringent security measures, the DOC confirmed Tuesday.

Around noon April 9, a decision was made to institute a prison lockdown following two gang-related altercations in two separate housing units at the Craigsville facility, said Larry Traylor, a DOC spokesman.

Traylor said two inmates were involved in a fight in one of the units, and three inmates took part in the other fight. One inmate was treated at a local hospital for a broken jaw and has since been returned to Augusta Correctional, he said.

Traylor said the facility will remain on lockdown while the DOC reviews its population assignments at the Level 3 prison, which he said will result in the transferring of aggressive gang members into other prisons.
