A 19-year-old Fort Worth, Texas man died Tuesday at John Peter Smith Hospital after collapsing in a Tarrant County jail dayroom. Mario Paschall was pronounced dead at 6:57 a.m. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Paschall's death natural, caused by aortic dissection. Terry Grisham, executive administrator for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, said Paschall told jailers he had a heart problem when he was booked into the county jail on Aug. 6 after being arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During his incarceration, Paschall complained of abdominal pains and was checked by JPS staff at the jail and later at the hospital, Grisham said. Chief Deputy Mike Simonds said that after being checked by JPS, Paschall returned to the jail on Aug. 29. On Tuesday, two days later, the inmate had finished breakfast and was with other inmates and deputies in the dayroom when he collapsed, officials said. "It was our understanding from JPS records that he did have a heart condition that he had been treated for previously," Simonds said. Grisham said an internal investigation will be conducted into Paschall's death as in routine in in-custody deaths. |
