Dangerous prisoners, including the infamous Charles Manson, have been caught using smuggled prepaid cell phones to conduct business outside prison walls–a trend that has been increasingly popular and dangerous in recent years. Now, a company that provides the pay phones used inside prisons will put a stop to inmate cell phone use once and for all. Global Tel Link will install blocking technology inside the cell blocks where prisoners live–the technology must be set up so as not to interfere with the cell phones of civilians or prison workers, which would be illegal. The new technology will make its way first into California State Prison in Solano by the end of 2012, and if everything goes according to plan the technology will be in all prisons in the next three years.
