A state prison was sent into lockdown late Tuesday afternoon after a correctional officer was stabbed by an inmate, according to a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was escorting an inmate at Red Onion State Prison in Pound, Va., when the inmate attacked him, said Larry Traylor. The incident happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday and the inmate, whose name was also not released, was locked up and questioned and the prison was locked down, Traylor said.

"The officer sustained what appear to be multiple stab wounds," Traylor said, adding that the wounds were on the officer's back, neck and head. "The injuries are non life-threatening."
