A jail inmate who has undergone two surgeries and faces four more for a severe staph infection on his left leg will be asking Gloucester County (N.J.) for $10 million in damages. Michael Collins, 33, said through his attorney that he was incarcerated in the county jail in April with a clean bill of health. Now, he is in Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury with what he describes as a hole the size of a miniature basketball in his thigh, dealing with surgery complications and facing at least three operations and a skin graft. "When you go to jail to serve your debt to society and you're released, you've served that debt and paid in full," said Scott McKinley, Collins' attorney. "But when you contract something like this in a prison setting, you're paying a much heavier debt than anyone should be expected for the type of crime you've committed." Collins was transported from Tennessee on New Jersey parole violation charges via a private inmate transport company to Gloucester County. He is scheduled to be released from the county jail in Woodbury Friday, Sept. 10, but his surgeries are expected to keep in him the hospital for at least the next two weeks, his attorney said. Collins has been bedridden at the hospital after he reportedly acquired a type of staph infection called MRSA, according to court documents. |
