NEOSHO, Mo. — Two inmates were taken to a hospital Monday night after a reported double suicide attempt inside the Newton County Jail. Both were checked out and dismissed. “Two of the guys in a pod had some sort of suicide pact,” Sheriff Ken Copeland said Tuesday. The sheriff said a corrections officer in a tower inside the jail observed two inmates at the top of a stairwell about 9 p.m. Monday. They suddenly secured blankets to a railing, tied them around their necks and tried to hang themselves from the railing, he said. Copeland said one of the inmates climbed over the railing and let himself down, and the other jumped off. Other inmates saw what was happening and went over and held the men’s bodies up until corrections officers could get control of the situation. Read More. |
