| Sheriff Cabral Lends Support to Mentoring Event |

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral spoke before a gathering of local professionals about the great need for mentors that exists for young people of color in and around the communities of Boston. Spearheaded by Mass Mentoring Partnership’s Mentors of Color campaign and The Boston Foundation, the event, titled “The Gift of Obligation: The Power of Mentoring in the Community” featured an intergenerational mixer designed to help launch the “Mentoring Mentors” initiative, which seeks to match caring adult Latinos and African-Americans with youth of color. During the event, several of Boston’s seasoned and young professionals of color, representing a cross-section of different industries, mingled as they discussed the impact of mentoring in communities of color. Addressing a crowd of nearly 100 attendees, Sheriff Cabral – a Mass Mentoring board member and longtime mentoring advocate – urged event participants to join in the effort to provide greater support for children in need of mentoring, and challenged everyone to reach out to friends, colleagues and family members to do the same. As the event drew to a close, 57 guests stepped forward with inquiries about becoming mentors. Mass Mentoring Partnership is the only statewide organization solely dedicated to strategically expanding quality youth mentoring in Massachusetts. As the umbrella organization for more than 190 mentoring organizations supporting 23,000 youth in mentoring relationships across the state, it provides services including training and technical assistance, networking and professional development, mentor recruitment campaigns, advocacy, resource development & recognition, and mentor-mentee match activities.
