Red Onion State Prison remains on lockdown following stabbing |

A maximum-security prison remained on lockdown Wednesday, a day after one of the correctional officers was stabbed by an inmate, officials said. The officer at Red Onion State Prison in Pound, Va., was transporting the prisoner when he was stabbed several times in his back, neck and head area about 3 p.m. Tuesday, said Larry Traylor, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Corrections. The officer was initially treated by prison medical staff, and then taken to a hospital “as a precaution,” Traylor said Wednesday. The officer was released from the emergency room about 6 p.m. Tuesday. “All the wounds appear to be superficial,” Traylor said. “And he is resting.” A special investigations team under the department’s inspector general is investigating the incident, he said. Traylor said neither the inmate nor the officer’s name would be released, citing the ongoing investigation and the possibility for charges to be filed. A homemade weapon was confiscated from the prisoner, and Traylor said he couldn’t elaborate on what kind of weapon it was. Read More. |
