An inmate who authorities say started a disturbance last summer at Auburn Correctional Facility in New York has admitted to assaulting a corrections officer. Moshe Canty, 26, pleaded guilty Aug. 26 to one count of second-degree assault. Canty was the primary leader in the June 14, 2003, disturbance, said Cayuga County Chief Assistant District Attorney Jon Budelmann. Canty will be sentenced Sept. 30 to five years in prison for the attack. He originally was charged with one count of first-degree riot, three counts of second-degree assault, one count of second-degree gang assault and one count of fourth-degree conspiracy. Another inmate involved in the riot, Justin Henry, 23, rejected a similar plea offer. He was charged with one count of first-degree riot and three counts of second-degree assault. Canty and Henry were among 12 inmates indicted in the disturbance, which ended with guards firing two warning shots. Several officers were injured. The maximum-security prison, which houses nearly 1,800 inmates, was locked down for nine days after the attack. Although only 12 inmates were indicted on criminal charges, prison authorities brought internal disciplinary charges against 24 inmates. Canty is now an inmate at Southport. He is serving 20 years for second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Henry is an inmate at Elmira Correctional Facility and is serving three to seven years for second-degree robbery. |
