JACKSON, MI — Michigan Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns said the billions the state spends on prisons should not been seen as a money "down the drain" but as an investment in the state's future and safety. Speaking at the Optimist Club's annual Respect for Law Awards Banquet, Heyns said proposed enhancements and reforms to re-entry programs, specialty courts, job training and parole will aid efforts to increase public safety. "We have those programs that work and invest in those," Heyns said, adding that 95 percent of his prisoners are released and return to society. "When they come back, they have the right skills to succeed." Heyns, who stepped down as Jackson County Sheriff to head the corrections department, spoke enthusiastically about working in Gov. Rick Snyder's administration. He praised the governor's recently unveiled "smart justice" approach to public safety. "You should take heart because he gets it. He understands how important your role is to re-inventing Michigan," Heyns said to an audience that included the command staffs of several county departments and their top officers. "His words have been re-assuring to law enforcement." Heyns said the governor's plan is complex and "the right balance between tough an smart justice." The plan, in part, starts re-entry programs sooner, creates job training programs that teach useful skills, enhances drug and mental health courts and strengthens parole compliance. Read More. |
