Overtime down at Department of Corrections for first quarter |

Madison, WI -- Overtime costs at the state Department of Corrections are down by $2.1 million for the first three months of this year, Gov. Scott Walker's administration reported. The state spent $6.9 million on overtime in the first quarter of this year, down from $9 million for the same period the year before. The drop came as changes in state overtime rules started in January. The change followed Walker's repeal last year of most collective bargaining for most public workers, ending negotiations on overtime. Walker said in a statement that in the past overtime had been abused by some workers in the prisons. "Over the years, because of collective bargaining contracts, state leaders were unable to make common-sense reforms to end this abuse. Because of the reforms we put in place, state leaders are taking the necessary steps to end the abuse, saving millions for taxpayers, and continuing to fairly compensate state workers," he said.
