Event honors the state's fallen |

Salem., Oregon -- One hundred and seventy five American flags line the entrance to the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. There is one for every member of Oregon law enforcement who died on duty, all of whom have their names inscribed in the Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. Three men, whose names are the most recently engraved, were honored Tuesday during a memorial ceremony at the department grounds in Salem. Several hundred friends, family and law enforcement from around the state watched as a combined honor guard performed the three-volley salute, “Taps” played on a bugle and comrades spoke of each man’s sacrifice. “This is a sobering reminder of the number of officers killed on duty and their families affected,” said state police Lt. Gregg Hastings. Eugene police Officer Chris Kilcullen was fatally shot April 22, 2011, during a traffic stop. Kilcullen, who was 42, worked for the agency for 12 years and had accumulated more than 80 awards and accolades for his service, said Eugene Police Chief Pete Kerns. Oregon Department of Corrections Officer Buddy Ray Herron, 42, was on his way to work Nov. 28 when he stopped to help what he thought was a stranded driver, who ended up fatally stabbing Herron.
