Judge: Corrections must comply with state disability law
By Associated Press
Published: 09/06/2004

A court says the Vermont Human Rights Commission has jurisdiction to investigate discrimination complaints in the state's prisons.
Washington County Superior Court Judge Alan Cook says the jurisdiction comes through the Vermont Fair Housing and Public Accommodations Act.
Human Rights Commission Executive Director Robert Appel says the decision will encourage the Department of Corrections to engage in good correctional practices and comply with state law.
Corrections Department officials say they haven't seen the decision and so cannot comment.
Corrections had argued the state's prisons are not public institutions.
