He admits that he fathered an inmate's child. But a former state corrections officer says much more went on behind the prison fence. Anthony Peterson says he was not the only officer having sex at the state women's detention facility on Harmon Avenue. But Peterson got caught and subsequently fired, then criminally charged because of a baby and a DNA test that proved he's the father. Anthony Peterson knew he could go to prison for five years when he headed to Franklin County court last Monday. In the courtroom, former inmate Reena White appeared. She's the mother of Peterson's 7-month-old son. Peterson acknowledges a relationship with White when she was being bars. It happened in the spring of 2003 behind the wire fence of the south Columbus facility. When 10TV first reported about the pregnant inmate, other inmates wrote to the station, saying no one was allowed to smoke there anymore, and inmates would do anything to get cigarettes. Anything. "There was a lot going on down there. A lot, like cigarettes for sex," Peterson said. "I wouldn't say a lot were having sex, but there was a lot of favors being traded." Two other corrections officers were fired for inappropriate relationships with inmates at the same lockup where Peterson worked. But Peterson is apparently the first officer to father an inmate's child. In addition to the three corrections officers fired from the Harmon Avenue location, the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has let go seven other officers for relationships with inmates at other prisons over the past two years. But there are hundreds of investigations into such relationship accusations each year. A prison official says guards often resign during those investigations. |
