CHIPLEY, FL — Chipley Mayor Linda Cain denied falsifying Florida Department of Corrections records in a news conference Friday morning at Chipley City Hall.

“There was no intent on my part to falsify the reports in question. In the course of the investigation, I answered each question posed to me the only way I knew, honestly and truthfully,” Cain said in a prepared statement. “My friends know that’s who I am. I cannot account for the interpretation of the answers given.”

Cain said she intends to see re-election as mayor. “I look forward to continuing my service to the city of Chipley, its employees and its citizens. Over the past 24 years I have strived to do what is best for Chipley, and to serve the city with honesty and integrity. I will continue to do so,” Cain said.

Cain received a 80-hour suspension from her job with the Florida Department of Corrections in Jackson County for, among other things, “falsification of reports or records,” “conduct which violates state statute,” and “failure to answer truthfully questions related to the performance of official duties” according to a DOC report released April 27.

The findings of the report were said to be sustained by the DOC Office of the Inspector General’s administrative investigation report and the addendum report.

The report details an investigation into misdeeds at Jackson Correctional Institution in Malone uncovered an affair between the warden and a nurse, doctored, deleted and shredded reports, negligent care of inmates, lies to investigators, and a host of other problems.

The investigation ultimately led to the termination of Warden Ted Jeter and Assistant Warden Carolann Bracewell.

“I have been told by the Department of Corrections that this unfortunate situation is behind us and we are moving forward. I am still proudly employed with the Department of Corrections and look forward to returning to work on May 18,” Cain said in her statement.
