Three Benton County, Ark. Jail inmates are accused of breaking into the jail's evidence room with the intention of stealing drugs KHBS/KHOG reported Thursday. Inmates Brandon Longo, Jeffrey Richards, and Michael Schneipp were taken into custody after they allegedly abused the privilege of being in the county's work program to break into an evidence locker, authorities said. The inmates, who worked in a repair shop fixing damaged patrol cars, were in jail because of drug-related convictions, police said. The suspects are accused of removing a panel from a security building with the intent of stealing drugs. They obtained a small amount of methamphetamine and marijuana, officials with the Sheriff's Department said. The drugs were being held as evidence in two trials, authorities said. A gun may have also been stolen. The drugs were discovered after authorities ordered a search of the jail facility, officials said. A search was under way to determine if a weapon was also taken, but none was found. "I can't blame anybody else," Sheriff Keith Ferguson said. "We just didn't have somebody on every minute, and we know that." But the work program is a risk worth taking, he said, because it saves taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Ferguson said the jail is re-evaluating procedures to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. |
