A Gaston County (N.C.) commissioner is calling for an investigation of the Tennessee-based company that oversees medical care at the Gaston County Jail, where two inmates have died recently. "I would think that at the very least, Prison Health Services with regards to their services to Gaston County, should warrant an audit," Gaston County commissioner Tom Keigher said. PHS has been the target of investigators in two other states where it operates. In Florida's Palm Beach County, officials blame the company for nine inmate deaths in the last two years, while New York's Commission of Corrections has issued a pair of scathing reports on PHS's performance in connection with two inmate deaths. Hugh Locklear Jr., 21, was found dead in his cell at the Gaston jail Saturday. His father, who was jailed with him, said his son was epileptic and did not receive medication. That was eight days after police said Yolanda Evett Patterson, 28, was found not breathing in a holding cell, where she was waiting to be charged. She died at Gaston Memorial Hospital. PHS serves approximately 235,000 inmates in more than 400 jails and prisons in 35 states. |
