NEWARK, NJ — A targeted shooting left a Union County juvenile detentions officer dead and a second officer injured near the Arena Lounge on Mulberry Street in Newark this morning, marking the second major crime near the Prudential Center in the past 10 days. Quinton Brown, 23, of Hillside, was pronounced dead around 3:30 a.m. at University Hospital in Newark, according to Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The second victim, identified only as a 23-year-old from Plainfield, remains in critical condition, she said. A dispute that happened either inside or outside the lounge may have led to the shooting, according to Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. "Right now, we’re investigating whether or not there was a problem inside the bar before this that led to that … we know it’s not a robbery or anything like that," he said. Carter said the victims may have been targeted. DeMaio said investigators are trying to determine if any nearby cameras captured video of the attacks. Both men have been working at Union County's Juvenile Detention Facility in Linden since 2008, according to Sebastian D'elia, a spokesman for the county. D'Elia identified the second victim as 23-year-old Theolander Abney. “Obviously our sympathies go out to the families involved," said D'Elia "This is sad.” The bar is located near both City Hall and the Prudential Center, and the killing comes a week after a roving band of teenagers assaulted and robbed five people leaving a sold-out Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the arena. The two-minute crime spree, which DeMaio said involved nine teenage "thugs," left one man with a fractured eye socket, a Livingston teen with multiple facial fractures, and a father from New Providence bloodied and unconscious, according to police reports and one of the victim's fathers. Newark Police arrested three teens last week and charged them with rioting and assault in connection with the crimes. DeMaio said three more of the attackers were captured over the weekend, and the department had identified the final three suspects. The lounge shootings also come on the heels of a 36-day stretch without a homicide in Newark, the city's third longest streak without bloodshed since 1961. The peace broke Saturday morning, and two people have died since then. Read More. |
