Jackson – Yesterday, the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) presented the agency’s eleventh annual Employee of the Year award to South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) Commander Brenda Sims. Commander Sims has been employed with MDOC since 1991. She received the award at the annual Eddie Lucas Employee Recognition Program which has honored more than a hundred MDOC employees. Commander Sims began her career as a Correctional Officer. She worked her way up through the ranks to Correctional Officer IV, Correctional Supervisor and then to her present position of Correctional Commander. Hired in August of 1991, Commander Sims has proven herself to be a valuable employee who believes in doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Ron King, the Superintendent of the South Mississippi Correctional Institution, stated that, “There is no doubt that the on-going efforts and dedication of Commander Brenda Sims has prevented assaults on staff and offenders, reduced Security Threat Group disruptive behavior, prevented the introduction and facilitated the confiscation of serious contraband and aided in the utmost priority of public safety by obtaining valid intelligence on potential escapes from this prison. Her contribution to the safety and security of this prison is unparalleled and sets the example for others to follow.” “We wake up every day to provide security, custody, control and care to murderers, rapists and robbers. It is so difficult for people who are not in this profession to appreciate what an important and incredibly challenging job all you have,” said MDOC Commissioner Chris Epps. “I salute each of you. As your commissioner, I have relied on you, the staff of MDOC, to uphold the high standards of our agency. My trust in you has been well placed.” Senator Sampson Jackson, II was the featured speaker at the event, which included MPIC board members, legislators, corrections employees, parole board members, members of the Eddie Lucas family, and family and friends of the five nominees of the Employee of the Year award. MDOC initiated the employee recognition awards program in 2001 and hosted the first Employee of the Year event in 2002 to honor employees who received employee awards during the previous year. Commissioner Epps and the MDOC executive staff recognized MDOC employees in calendar year 2011 for their daily dedication and hard work in maintaining public safety through offender care, custody, control and treatment. Employees were selected from the Mississippi State Penitentiary, Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, South Mississippi Correctional Institution, Central Office and the Community Corrections Division as the Employee of the Year nominees.
