JACKSONVILLE — Local law enforcement officials paid homage to their brethren who paid the ultimate sacrifice to their community while in the line of duty this week. In honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, the Jacksonville Police Department held a flag ceremony in front of the department. “What we are here for today is to honor those people who have given their lives for their communities — the people who are the thin blue line between anarchy and a good life,” Police Chief Reece Daniel said. Daniel said in the history of Jacksonville, four offices have fallen. On Aug. 30, 1883, City Marshal William A. Clark was killed in a gunfight in downtown Jacksonville. On July 22,1913 night patrolman Harry Floyd Hooker was shot by an unknown assailant by the train tracks. On June 30, 1979 patrol Officer Roscoe Lee was killed by a shotgun, and on Oct. 2, 1992 Patrol Officer Randy Zimmerman was fatally shot with a .357 caliber handgun. “My heart goes back to the 1800s,” Daniel said. “It begins there because those people did the same thing that modern law enforcement officers do without the resources (of today) ... This is a day we honor those who have given it all.” Read More. |
