WDOC selects department Employees of the Year
By Wyoming Department of Corrections
Published: 05/22/2012

Cheyenne – Wyoming Department of Corrections Director Robert Lampert has announced the Wyoming Department of Corrections uniform and non-uniform Employees of the Year.

Christina Russell, an Intensive Supervision Program agent in the Cheyenne Field Services Office, has been selected as the non-uniform Employee of the Year and Officer Brian Church from the Wyoming Medium Correctional Facility (WMCI) in Torrington has been selected as the Officer of the Year.

“We are fortunate to have excellent staff throughout the Wyoming Department of Corrections. It makes for tough decisions when we have to choose but a few to recognize,” Director Lampert said. “But I am happy to be able to recognize these individuals and especially Christina and Brian for the excellent work they have done for the last year and over their entire time with the department.”

“Our employees are effectively managing offenders and community risk, while giving each offender access to the opportunities necessary to become effective, law-abiding citizens upon their transition back into our communities,” he said. “The challenges faced by correctional staff members are tremendous, yet these dedicated professionals continue to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Russell started with the Department of Corrections in December 2006. It was stated in her recommendation for recognition that her peers are consistently impressed with the knowledge that she has about services in the local community and the contact that she has made to assist clients in addressing their needs.

Her enthusiastic attitude and approach to her job and other projects is an asset to the agency and to newer employees. She has become a go-to person with her peers and a trusted and valued knowledge base.

Russell is involved with the Positive Reinforcements, Incentives, and Sanctions Matrix (PRISM) committee where she played a role in developing the Sex Offender PRISM.

She has assisted with national presentations on PRISM, and maintains the PRISM Resource available to employees. In addition, she is involved with the Transition from Prison to Community (TPC) and Field Training for her district.

She also excels in the community as an advocate with the Laramie County Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and as current Vice President of the Laramie County DUI Victim Impact Panel. Russell is also a Court Mentor for Youth Alternatives and volunteer for the Wyoming Children’s Society.

Brian Church has been at WMCI since July 2010 and attended the Department of Corrections Training Academy in Rawlins. It was stated in his recommendation for recognition that Church has proven to be a true asset at WMCI and has shown a desire to expand his knowledge in the field of corrections. No matter the circumstances or job assignment, he can always be counted on to have a smile on his face that is infectious with all those who work around him.

Church has an uncanny way of de-escalating situations that inevitably arise in the business of corrections. His easy-going manner, work ethic, and dedication are among the many qualities admired by his fellow staff.

Church came to Wyoming from Michigan. He is a PPCT and NRCT Instructor, STG Team member, weapons qualified, trained on Emergency Preparedness for supervisors, and is looking forward to becoming an FTO and ACA Certified Officer.

Russell and Church were chosen from 13 employees who were selected as uniform or non-uniform employees of the year for their respective facility or regional office.

They include:
  • Richard Burton, Wyoming State Penitentiary, Rawlins
  • Jerri Covello, Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution, Torrington
  • Officer John Hansen, Wyoming Honor Farm, Riverton
  • Officer Richard Jackman, Wyoming State Penitentiary, Rawlins
  • Theodore Klotter, Wyoming Honor Farm, Riverton
  • Cpl. Amanda Kraft, Wyoming Women’s Center, Lusk
  • Kasielyn Peterman, Field Services, Northern Region
  • Virginia Pullen, Wyoming Women’s Center, Lusk
  • Lt. Timothy Rysell, Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp, Newcastle
  • Carrie Stanley, Central Office, Cheyenne
  • Gary Underberg, Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp, Newcastle

All 13 employees were recognized for their accomplishments and excellence at a recognition luncheon on May 9 at the Wyoming Department of Corrections central office in Cheyenne.

Governor Matt Mead joined the exemplary employees and their guests for luncheon and was the guest speaker. Gov. Mead also signed a proclamation during the luncheon designating the week of May 7-11 as Wyoming Correctional Professionals’ Week.
