FBI, U.S. Attorney take over prison riot probe |

The Adams County Sheriff’s Department said in a release Tuesday that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office have taken over the investigation into a fatal prison riot. The statement, released by Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield on the department’s website, said recent meetings with the Corrections Corporations of America officials and FBI agents, the decision was made that the FBI should lead the investigation into the May 20 prison riot that left senior corrections officer Catlin Carithers, 24, dead of blunt force trauma to the head. At least 17 others were treated for injuries, including three prisoners, after a riot that included jailers being held hostage, damage to the physical property, and fires being set in addition to Carithers’ death.
