Nine state prison inmates have killed themselves this year, say prison officials who are hiring a consultant to find better prevention methods. Cody Shreves, 20, was found hanging in his cell early last Monday at the Dayton (Ohio) Correctional Institution, three months into a three-year sentence for attempted felonious assault in Mercer County. Shreves tied his bed sheet to a bar over a window shortly after an officer's routine check of the cells, said Lt. Richard Zwayer, spokesman for the State Highway Patrol, which is investigating. Ten inmates committed suicide in 1999. The state has kept systemwide records on suicides only since 1993, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Culp said last Tuesday. Investigators found nothing in common among this year's deaths. State prisons director Reginald Wilkinson wants to hire a consultant to study the problem and has ordered each prison to form prevention and response teams, Culp said. The department also is developing protocols and training for officers who discover a suicide attempt, such as whom to notify and call for backup and how to remove the inmate. The prisons soon will give inmates handouts on depression and are showing new inmates a video on suicide prevention at the intake center and during orientation, Culp said. The video also is available for other inmates to view. |
