Officials tour Jackson Correctional Institution

Malone, Fla. -- New Jackson Correctional Institution Warden Randall Bryant promised an administration of transparency and commitment to community as he begins his tenure in the job he took over a couple of weeks ago in the wake of a scandal that resulted in the termination of previous warden, Ted Jeter. Jeter was dismissed on reports of the mishandling of a medical event at the institution, and a subsequent alleged cover-up.

Bryant made no reference to that situation, however, as he spoke at a dinner meeting and tour for community leaders Tuesday.

The gathering was one of many similar sessions being carried out at prisons across the state over the past several weeks, and the timing was simply coincidental with the dismissal of Jeter and the onset of Bryant’s leadership, officials said.

Bryant and other prison staff members focused their presentations on the institution and what it brings to the community it serves.

JCI Officer Shedrick McGriff, for instance, talked about the work camp community labor force and the farm programs he helps oversee.

Many inmates are assigned to the city of Marianna, Sunland Training Center and 28 other entities. Their work, officials estimate, saves the municipalities and other entities a collective $1.5 million in labor costs each year. Work squads from Jackson Work Camp saved them a collective $961,065 in labor costs last year, officials estimated.

JCI also oversees the Graceville Work Camp. When the GWC labor contribution is added in, the community savings come to about $1,545,376, officials estimated, with a total of $584,309 of that attributable to the GCI squad. Together, the squads put in about 90,000 hours over the course of the year. The savings were calculated on a $16.91-per-hour wage.
