BOURNE, MA — There are 430 inmates at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility but an average of only about 30 correctional officers on duty at any given time. Training to work at the Bourne jail is, by necessity, a hands-on experience. Correctional officer recruits kick, punch and grapple their way to a job. They also learn how to use specialized software, testify in court and address a long list of situations. "There's no set of characteristics that are perfect," Special Sheriff Jeffrey Perry said Friday while observing the latest class of 16 recruits in training. "We're looking for people who have good character, who are mature and looking for a career." For recruits, the path to that career can be long. Applicants must be 19 years old and have a high school diploma. Of 250 applicants for the latest recruit class, about 200 passed a basic intelligence test, Perry said. Less than half of those, however, passed a physical test that includes a timed run, sit-ups and push-ups, he said. Preliminary background checks and a hiring panel narrowed the field to 18 recruits. A more thorough background check, including interviews with neighbors and a drug test, is required before training begins. One recruit dropped out immediately and a second one lasted through about half of the 10-week training course, Perry said. Of the remaining 16, three are women. Graduation for the recruits is June 16. Read More. |
