EDITORIAL: Alabama's mean prisons |

It's doubtful any Alabama prison will ever be a safe place, but there can be little doubt Alabama prisons ought to be a lot safer than they are today. A major part of the problem is that Alabama lawmakers have consciously ignored the prison system for decades. Their legacy was demonstrated in a report Sunday by The Birmingham News' Robin DeMonia, who documented a sharp increase in prison violence over the last several years. And experts say conditions are likely to grow worse because the prisons can expect even less money next fiscal year. Consider this: * Three inmates have been killed in the last seven months, compared to no more than one homicide a year in the previous four years. In fact, the prison system reported no homicides in fiscal 2010-11. * The prisons reported almost 1,400 fights and nonsexual assaults in that year, an increase of nearly 40 percent. Read More. |
