Danville, Ky. police are investigating a fire Monday afternoon at the Boyle County Jail.
The fire started at about 12:45 p.m. when inmates lit paper towels and tissue on fire, Danville police told LEX 18.
Police said the incident is being investigated as an arson.
Police said the fire was the result of three days of confrontations between 13 inmates in maximum security and officers. The incidents started with inmates stuffing bed linens in the toilets on Friday, then putting newspaper over the windows to their dorm-style cell to block the officers' view, police said.
The inmates were punished with the loss of phone and television privileges, police said.
Corrections officers notice the fire Monday when smoke filtered out beneath the cell door and quickly put out the fire with an extinguisher, police said.
Three inmates were treated at the jail for smoke inhalation and three others were taken to Ephraim-McDowell Regional Medical Center, police said.
The cell sustained some smoke damage, including soot on the walls, police said.
