Increase of inmates at Asotin County Jail due to new Washington law |

CLARKSTON, WA - The Asotin County Jail is nearly maxed out of space as their population approaches capacity. A small jail and a few too many inmates is what Jail Commander Captain Jon Singleton has to deal with since a new law supported by the Department of Corrections has been put in place. Since June 1st, the new law requiring a short term mandatory arrest policy means those on probation can't step out of line. "If somebody was to check in late or they had a bad UA, instead of sending them to a treatment program they are now requiring them to be arrested," said Singleton. Singleton said they like to keep Asotin County jail at about 46 inmates but right now they're at about 55 inmates total. In a jail cell is a concrete bunk, a steel bunk and they'll have an inmate sleeping on the floor when they're highly crowded. "It's an accountability experiment that they're using," said Singleton. The law is an experiment that the jail staff and the inmates are forced to deal with.
