Pontiac prison gets more cable TV for Tamms inmates |

SPRINGFIELD, Ill — Hundreds of state prison inmates won’t just be switching prisons in the coming weeks: Some of them will be switching channels. State purchasing records show the Illinois Department of Corrections is scrambling to install cable television outlets in four of the galleries in the north cell house at the maximum-security prison in Pontiac. The state’s no-bid contract with Kelly Electric of Pontiac is designed to get the prison in Pontiac ready to take in inmates from the soon-to-close Tamms Correctional Center. The $12,500 expense doesn’t mean every inmate will have access to a menu of cable programming, but prison officials say it’s a necessary expense to preserve peace within the prison walls. “Cable television offers inmates additional educational and religious programming. Television is also used as a behavior management tool,” Corrections spokeswoman Stacey Solano noted in an email Wednesday.
