A Riverfront State Prison, N.J. inmate injured himself in a failed escape attempt this weekend, just weeks before he was due to be released. The inmate, whose name was not released, sustained several cuts when he climbed over a 10-foot, razor-sharp fence at the medium-security facility in Camden. Deirdre Fedkenheuer, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections, said officers saw what was happening and were moving toward the area when the man fell around 9:15 a.m. Sunday, landing between that fence and a nearby 15-foot fence. The man apparently broke his leg in the fall and was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries. Fedkenheuer said the man was serving a sentence for a 1988 robbery conviction and was due to finish his term Nov. 27. He now will face escape charges and, if convicted, could face up to five more years in prison. |
