SANTA FE, NM - A state Corrections Department investigation cleared a former Los Lunas prison warden on Thursday of covering up the alleged rape of an inmate by a guard captain.

A civil lawsuit filed last month claims Warden Anthony Romero tried to interfere with an FBI investigation into allegations that a captain raped an inmate.

On Thursday Department of Corrections officials said Romero did nothing wrong. In fact, they said he did what he was supposed to do.

“When the information came to his attention he notified law enforcement, isolated the inmate and tried to find out the perpetrator,” Deputy Secretary of Corrections Joe Booker said.

The end of a six-week long internal investigation comes after a civil lawsuit claiming Romero tried to cover up an alleged rape in 2011. In the suit the victim is alleged to be an inmate, and the accused rapist is Capt. Kenneth Carrejo.

The inmate’s attorney, Matthew Coyte, said his client collected a DNA sample during one of the attacks and that the FBI was planning an undercover operation to secretly get it.
