Inmate escapes, but not for long

A 21-year-old Schenectady, N.Y. man who escaped from the minimum-security camp at Mount McGregor Correctional Facility early Sunday was spotted later in the morning by a state trooper in the town of Moreau and recaptured.
Samuel Gonzales Jr., was charged with first-degree escape, a class D felony, for leaving the camp, which has no cells and no fence. At 8:30 a.m., state police got word that an inmate was missing, and they cooperated with the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office and the state Department of Corrections on the search.
At 9:38 a.m., the state trooper saw Gonzales running into the woods near Northway Exit 17 and Route 9 in Moreau. Saratoga County Sheriff's Deputy Dave Petrie, a K-9 officer, responded to the area with additional state police and Sheriff's Office personnel. Gonzales was taken into custody without incident a few minutes later after a brief search.
Gonzales was convicted for felony possession of stolen property in Schenectady County after an arrest in 2002. According to state police, he had four more months at Mount McGregor before he was eligible for parole.
An investigation is ongoing into how he got free. He was in the minimum-security part of the facility, where the inmates, all men, stay in dormitories. The camp is adjacent to a medium-security prison. The facility is run by the New York State Department of Corrections.
Gonzales was arraigned in Wilton Town Court and remanded to the custody of the corrections department. The case will be referred to Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III for prosecution.
In March 2003, an inmate in the minimum-security camp at Mount McGregor escaped only to be recaptured six hours later in Greenfield. The last escape prior to that was an inmate who left the camp in 1995 only to be taken into custody after 11 minutes.
