County jail to house more state prisoners |

ADRIAN, Mich. — More state prison inmates are wanted at the Lenawee County Jail. The jail has been housing up to 20 state prisoners since January. Another 10 are being requested to boost revenue from the Michigan Department of Corrections, said Sheriff Jack Welsh at a county commission criminal justice committee meeting on Thursday. “We’re just waiting for them to send us more,” Welsh said. The program of using empty beds at the county jail to house state prisoners has gone well so far, Welsh said. There was some difficulty at the beginning when parole violators were being taken to the jail and cycled in and out every few days. The jail is now receiving longer-term prisoners finishing the last six to 12 months of their sentences. Because the jail has had vacant space in recent years, state prisoners can be accommodated with the current jail staff. The only expense has been meals. Read More. |
