Some Iowa prisons lack air conditioning |

Most of the 8,343 inmates in Iowa’s prison system had air conditioning to stay cool during last week’s heat wave, but some are serving their time without it, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections. In Texas, two lawsuits have been filed that challenge the lack of air conditioning in that state’s prisons. Only 21 of 111 Texas prisons are air-conditioned. According to news reports, four Texas inmates died last summer from heat stroke or hyperthermia, and inmate rights advocates believe at least five others died last summer from heat-related causes. Inmates and advocates in Texas say the overheated conditions violate the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. Iowa has nine state prisons, and a majority are air-conditioned, said Lettie Prell, the state agency’s research director.
