SOMERVILLE, NJ — A new round of criminal charges is awaiting a Somerset County Jail inmate who sent three corrections officers to the hospital when he attacked one and tried to fight off two others who moved in to intervene, authorities said Monday. It was just before 7 a.m. Monday when 19-year-old Mubarak Y. Muhammad assaulted an officer in the jail’s housing unit, punching him in the face and head repeatedly, according to Somerset County Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano. While attempting to restrain Muhammad, two more officers were injured, one suffering a laceration to his arm and the other suffering a knee contusion and abrasions, Provenzano said. The laceration was thought to have been caused by violent contact with a cell door or bunk. All three injured officers were transported to Somerset Medical Center for treatment, and one remained hospitalized as of mid-afternoon on Monday. However, none of the officers suffered injuries serious enough to keep them out of service for any significant length of time, Provenzano said. Read More. |
