PHOENIX (AP) — State officials have recouped about $55,000 of the more than $1.1 million in unemployment benefits that improperly were paid to prisoners over two years. The state Department of Economic Security discovered in February that 475 inmates received payments from January 2010 to January 2012 after cross-checking its unemployment benefit rolls with a list of state prisoners. The inmates cannot work, so they’re not eligible for the benefits. The average payout was around $2,900, but one person received about $10,000 over 46 weeks, said Mark Darmer, the department’s deputy assistant director for the Division of Employment and Rehabilitation Services.
