State prisons dangerously understaffed |

ALBANY — Are New York's prisons understaffed? The union representing prison guards along with the state's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision got into a spat Monday after the union, the New York State Corrections Officers PBA, claimed the state's prisons are "operating at dangerously low staffing levels." The union said inmates were reconsolidated within various prison facilities on Friday, and that state statistics show 17,478 correction officers overseeing an inmate population of 55,791, above the desired 3-1 ratio between inmates and guards. "Every day when they go to work, NYSCOPBA members put their lives on the line on behalf of the people of New York," said Donn Rowe, the union's president. "The state should support those brave men and women by fully staffing our prisons. NYSCOPBA has repeatedly called for an independent review of our prison system." Read More. |
