Group sues Fluvanna women's prison over conditions

A group of lawyers, including some employed at the Legal Aid Justice Center, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court this morning against the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women on behalf of five currently incarcerated women, claiming that health care standards at the prison are so low that they violate inmates’ Eighth Amendment rights.

The Eighth Amendment protects prisoners from cruel and unusual punishment and also requires that correctional facilities provide adequate health care to inmates, Legal Aid attorney Abigail Turner said at a press conference this morning.
