| Dade County inmate escapes jail with emergency ploy |

Dade County Missouri -- An inmate who escaped from the Dade County Jail coaxed a jailer to speak with him, then grabbed the jailer’s taser and fled, according to Dade County Sheriff Steven Stapp. William Korry Smith escaped from the jail in Greenfield about 2:30 a.m. Monday. In an email to media, Stapp says that Smith told the on-duty jailer there was an emergency in the cells. The jailer opened the cell doors to see what the emergency was. After speaking the jailer, Smith allegedly grabbed the jailer by the wrist and took a taser from the jailer’s belt and brandished it. Smith attempted to barricade himself in another room, but the jailer chased him and he fled out of the building. The jailer called 911, alerting Stapp and Greenfield police. Stapp says the escape was captured on camera. According to Stapp, numerous residences in Dade County have been searched, but Smith remains at large. However, a cell phone belonging to a recently released inmate recovered in the jail cells shows communication between Smith and a woman before his escape, Stapp says. He adds that strip searches are not allowed until inmates have been transferred to the Missouri Department of Corrections and that this allows contraband to be smuggled into the jail. Read More. |
