A visitor to the Los Angeles (Calif.) Central Jail was arrested last week after refusing to surrender his cell phone and getting into a scuffle with sheriff's deputies. A woman who was at the jail to visit another inmate said the man was beaten by deputies. Sheriff's spokeswoman Alba Yates said that wasn't true. She said officers explained to the man that he couldn't bring a cell phone into the jail and were escorting him out when he became belligerent. A fight ensued and the man was pepper-sprayed. At least one deputy was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The man was arrested for investigation of assault on a peace officer. The witness maintains she saw him "in a fetal position" and beaten by several officers. |
