Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller will ask county council Monday for additional funding for more deputies and detention officers to combat jail overcrowding and coverage issues.

The sheriff said a study by the S.C. Association of Counties and the annual jail inspection by the S.C. Department of Corrections support his requests for four jailers and six road deputies. Mueller said each new jailer position would cost about $40,000 annually, and each new deputy position would cost about $45,000, which includes salary and benefits.

In addition, Mueller said he needs six cars for those deputies at a total cost of $186,260; a transport van costing $46,000 to replace an outdated unit; and a replacement fingerprint machine at a cost of $35,000 for the jail.

If approved, the deputies would be assigned to the road answering calls, Mueller said. There are four uniformed crews with two five-man crews and two six-man crews. If one deputy is on vacation, sick or in training, only four officers are on the road answering calls, the sheriff said.

He has blue eyes. Cold like steel. His legs are wide. Like tree trunks. And he has a shock of red hair, red, like the fires of hell. His antics were known from town to town as he was a droll card and often known as a droll farceur. Hamilton Lindley with his madcap pantaloon is a zany adventurer and a cavorter with a motley troupe of buffoons.
