In an effort to bring the community together, organizers gave the kids something to do. The first “Kick’N It With Christ” event was held Sunday at Mac Gray Park in Prattville. The kickball tournament placed six teams on three fields in groups that were put together by age. Derrick Hardy, who works with AJ’s Barber Style Shop in Prattville, was one of the main organizers of the event. He said the idea of a kickball tournament was tried a few years ago, but was rained out. “We just wanted to do something for the kids,” Hardy said. “So we invited the youth out, gave them a chance to come and fellowship.” Hardy said there wasn’t one specific group that put the event on, but rather a collection of area churches and organizations such as the local barber shop. Pastor McKinley Ross of Macedonia Baptist Church said he was appreciative of Sunday’s attendance. “If we can give the kids something to do, it gets them out of the streets,” he said. Ross discussed how the community came together to organize the event, even down to the donated food items that were available for free. The Alabama Department of Corrections made an appearance before the tournament kicked off, giving a K9 drug detection demonstration. “They loved it,” said investigator Eric Buscomb. “They got a chance to see the dog up close. And we got a chance to teach them to say no to drugs.” Read More. |
