Prisoner accidentally released too soon |

SANTA FE — Executives of the state prison system said Friday that an inmate was released eight years too soon because of an internal mistake. Members of the district attorney's staff in Bernalillo County caught the error Wednesday, and the man who had been freed was back behind bars a few hours later. The Department of Corrections identified the prisoner as Anthony Madrid, who will turn 38 this month. The department freed him May 7. A preliminary investigation by the DOC showed that Madrid served about 18 months for burglary, but still had another eight years remaining on his sentence for being an habitual offender. That part of his punishment inadvertently was left off calculations on his release date, the department said in a statement. Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel on July 16 authorized a statewide audit of all inmate files to make sure calculations on sentences were correct.
