Retiring prison official says officers abusing inmates

A California prison official who retired last week is blowing the whistle on what he describes as abuse of inmates by prison officers.
Edward Caden is retiring after 28 years with the Department of Corrections, including six months as warden of Salinas Valley State Prison.
Caden says while he managed the prison, officers beat up inmates and then conspired to cover up the beatings.
He also says that correctional officers planted contraband on inmates, setting them up for criminal prosecution.
Caden is not the first to allege misconduct at the Salinas prison. Two former officers from the prison have filed lawsuits alleging misconduct by fellow guards and their superiors.
One former officer testified about prison corruption in front of a state Senate committee in January.
