Wayne County Jail in Waynesboro, Tennessee shut down because of safety and health code violations. City leaders held a meeting last Tuesday night to figure out how to fix the problem.
The jail has been plagued with problems for years. Those problems range from faulty plumbing to no working fire alarm and smoke detectors. During a recent inspection, the State Fire Marshall also found signs of unsanitary living conditions. Leaky toilets and rusty shower stalls are just some of the problems. The jail also has faulty plumbing allowing sanitary waste to leak out. The situation got so bad that inmates had to be transferred to another jail sixty miles away. City leaders discussed ways to fix this and other problems.
"In case of an emergency power outage, the generator right now isn't working properly and we want to take that corrective action and do some emergency lighting and have fire drills," said Waynesboro Mayor Willard Pope.
The County Commission adopted the city's plan for improvement. They hope to begin working on the jail next week. The project could take eight months to finish.
