State scrambles to find wood to heat two prisons |

The state of Vermont is scrambling to find firewood to heat two prisons with wood-heat boilers that have sat idle for two years. Two weeks ago, the state put out a request for 500 cords of wood to help heat the Newport prison, and officials at the jail in Saint Johnsbury say they're also looking for wood. The search for firewood comes amid wrangling between the Corrections Department and the Vermont Buildings and General Services Department. The buildings agency is responsible for finding fuel for all state facilities, including jails. Officials there say the Corrections Department was uncooperative when it came to embracing wood heat. But Corrections officials say burning wood presents cost and logistical problems. |
