BLOOMINGTON (MCT) — The decision by Gov. Pat Quinn to end media tours of Illinois prisons is ill-advised and should be rescinded, state Treasurer Dan Rutherford said Monday. Rutherford told reporters that the practice of denying media access to the state’s facilities removes a layer of transparency from the public’s view of how the correctional centers operate. “Taking away the sunlight is not a good thing,” said Rutherford, pointing out that he initiated prison tours for newly elected state lawmakers and journalists when he took office as a state representative in 1993 before becoming state treasurer. The policy comes as the governor has asked for an investigation into leaks to reporters about activities at Tamms Correctional Center, the state’s high security prison in southern Illinois. The union representing prison workers has questioned the transfer of Tamms inmates to other facilities, a move necessary because Quinn wants to close the prison or use it to house less dangerous inmates.
