A 24-year-old Oakland, Calif. man was found dead in his cell at a California Youth Authority facility in Stockton early last Sunday morning, the fourth inmate death this year at the state's network of youth prisons. Dyron Mandell Brewer was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:54 a.m., officials said. The cause of death will be determined after toxicology tests are completed in a few weeks, but a spokeswoman for the San Joaquin County coroner's office said there were no obvious signs of foul play. "My prayers are with this young man and his family,'' CYA director Walter Allen said. ``I'm heartbroken over this, and my heart goes out to staff members who tried to revive him and who had to deal with the trauma of this happening.'' San Joaquin County sheriff's deputies and the local coroner's office are investigating the death. Brewer's roommate has been moved to another cell pending a routine investigation, and chaplains and counselors are on 24-hour call for staff and inmates. The death occurred in the Mojave living unit at the CYA's N.A. Chaderjian Youth Correctional Facility, housing some of the state's most serious and violent offenders. Brewer had returned to the CYA after serving a lengthy seven-year sentence and later violating the conditions of his parole. He stayed briefly at the DeWitt Nelson Youth Correctional Facility, also in Stockton, but was moved because of overcrowding, said CYA spokeswoman Nancy Lungren. |
