County prison board mulls long-term solution for overcrowding |

Hazleton, PA -- After another month of overcrowding at the Schuylkill County Prison, members of the prison board Wednesday discussed a more long-term solution as opposed to the temporary structure previously proposed by Proteus On-Demand Facilities LLC, Austell, Ga. "There is no reason right now to believe that our prison population will decrease in the near future," President Judge and prison board Chairman William E. Baldwin said during the board meeting. "We now identified a place inside the prison walls in the exercise yard as a place we don't need. It seems like a lot more sense to me to put up our own structure and be done with it. That seems to be a better investment than renting year after year." As of Wednesday, the inmate population at the prison was 288, including 47 females. The average population for July was 291, peaking at 302. The suggested capacity for the prison is 240. As of Wednesday, Warden Eugene Berdanier said 50 inmates were using mattresses on the floor.
