Janet Dack's dog Sierra had steak for dinner last Saturday night, a reward for sniffing out one of the convicted murderers who escaped from a prison transport van in Montana the previous Thursday night. Dack said when she let her Dalmatian outside that night, the dog "ran over by the garbage can and was barking, excessively." She said her husband went into the house and got a flashlight, walked around, didn't see anything and thought the dog must have been barking at a cat. While the Dacks finished watching a movie, unaware of the manhunt in the blocks around their house, Sierra kept going to the door whining and wanting out. "We didn't know what was going on outside," Dack said. "We didn't turn on our TV that night." She said when the couple went to bed, they heard a commotion outside their open window - people walking in the street, a knock on a door, a helicopter flying over. She said a couple of law officers walked by and she yelled down, "Excuse me. Should we be alarmed?" They explained they were searching for two escaped inmates and asked her to stay inside with the doors locked. Dack asked the officers to check the garbage can that Sierra had been barking at. "I came downstairs and turned the back yard light on. The next thing I knew I heard them yelling, all this commotion getting him out of the can." Officers arrested Russell Rex VanKirk "in our driveway, about 10 steps away from our unlocked back door," Dack said. She said he was wearing a white shirt, white boxers and some slipper-like socks and one of his legs was really bloody. VanKirk is serving a 110-year prison sentence for murdering a Helena woman in 1995. He escaped from the prison van at Burger King along with William L. Brown, who is serving 110 years for stabbing a man to death in Anaconda. Brown was captured a few hours after VanKirk, sneaking through someone's yard. |
